The Christmas Gospel
Chapter 3
Why the religious principle in our time is a mere detail, whilst the purely materialistic analyses, weights and measures are regarded as the main thing in the lives of the beings
Nowadays it is different. Belief no longer has the power it had in the past. Today there are many beings that can no longer be led by divine suggestion, which is also to say that they can no longer "believe". For them, the religious principle and their daily lives have become two things. And of these two things it is daily life that has become the main thing whilst the religious principle is a mere detail, if it has not then gone completely out of the picture. One understands therefore that these beings' mental hunger can no longer be satisfied by the speech of either the king, high priest or any other wise man. Indeed, today the king is certainly not at all "king" in the sense we have previously depicted. Today he is only a dying shadow, a mental ruin of the king-principle's antiquated, autocratic divine worthiness. Therefore the beings stick to only what they can perceive as concrete phenomena. And since their intellectuality still covers only the purely material facts that they are in a position to experience, everything that thus occurs outside this ability to experience will be something only unreal, be other beings' fabrications, fantasies or imaginations. And since they have now lost the ability to "believe", they cling exclusively to those material answers within the limits of their ability to understand. For such beings this means data, weights, measures, volume, speeds, wavelengths, vibrations, chemical formulae and so on, which is to say everything. They must use these phenomena as they are necessary for the building-up of any kind of intelligence-related or logical thought forms, which again are the same as analyses.
