135. First section. The human beings in the third category's first section consist of individuals so outstandingly developed with regard to their intelligence and feeling that they are approaching the "Great Birth's forecourt". As intelligence and feeling are not yet equally balanced in them - their intelligence being superior to their feeling - a certain form of disharmony is therefore present in their consciousness, and so they will not have admittance to that forecourt. However, it must be noted that there are some exceptions, namely such people belonging to this same category who can experience periods where the disharmony between intelligence and feeling is so slight that it may sometimes completely disappear. At such periods those people will find themselves in the Great Birth's forecourt and may even begin to meet the preliminary signs of that Birth. But this state of equilibrium is as yet only periodic, for immature tendencies will always appear in the consciousness now and again, and they must be smoothed out before the permanent "forecourt level" can be attained and with it a complete state of receptivity to the Great Birth. Therefore, just as we saw in the first section of the category of feeling, we see here those small "relapses" and are aware of the "guardians of the threshold". These brief "visits" in the Great Birth's forecourt described here are still mere exceptions, although for the people from the first sections of the categories of intelligence and feeling those "visits" will of course take place more and more frequently, according to how much the spiritual forces from the new world impulse come through. As the faculty of feeling in those individuals in the category of intelligence is underdeveloped, they will not be able to believe in anything which they cannot immediately interpret by logic and use of the brain. So they are not really adherents to old religious dogmas or traditions which, from an intellectual viewpoint, do not fit in with what we call "science". In spite of this those from the first section of the category of intelligence possess reasonably well-developed feeling which does cause them to be religiously minded. This religiousness does not appear as blind confidence in, devotion to, or worshipping of, current world religions or beliefs, but it appears more in the expression of an extraordinarily strong desire for solving spiritual problems. The object of life for these people will therefore be philosophical and spiritual research. This spiritual research can then be divided up into several categories. Some people make their speciality the study of the bible or researching into religions, while others work on producing for themselves a true world picture based on material, scientific experiences, and some include in their task the explanation of psychic phenomena. And so there are many different variations of the thirst for knowledge and desire for research, making the combined results of the third category's first section a field in evolution where the experiences of the faculty of feeling begin to connect up with the faculty of intelligence and its ability to analyse. So this section constitutes a zone in evolution where gleaming threads from the knowledge of science, or from pure material brainwork, begin to harmonize with corresponding threads from the faculty of feeling - a harmony from which "wisdom" arises and the revelation of the cosmic world begins. People in the third category's first section will therefore mainly appear in life among that branch of science's devotees we recognize under the terms "philosophers" and "spiritual researchers".
