Second category in group B.
The human beings within this category, just as those in Group A, second category, all have
a much too pronounced faculty of feeling in relation to their faculty of intelligence.
As it is the faculty of feeling which is accessible to suggestion, then these people will be considered almost as
"super-receptive" to divine suggestion or religious influence from the old world impulse.
Because of their inadequate ability to reason and use their intelligence, it is all too easy for them to have faith, which occasionally causes their beliefs and ideas about morality to be driven far too far towards the unrealistic.
Thus they can become
fanatical supporters of certain concepts and literal wording from the old world impulse which fit in with their own particular mental rhythm,
and that is why they are able to pronounce those ideas as "holy" or untouchable dogmas, indicating supreme authority - quite irrespective of how outdated the dogmas may be, or how at variance they are with the present standard of intelligence on Earth.
At the same time, on account of that fanaticism, these people - as the following will show - violate, quite unawares, other equally good precepts and commands emanating from the very same world impulse.
As they are worshippers more of literal wording than of the spirit or the true meaning behind it - which for them is very often something hidden - they arrive at the conviction that their own particular belief and concept is absolutely all-embracing, and complies with every stage of consciousness.
So they cannot grasp the fact that there are people possessing layers of consciousness where that particular concept cannot give any stimulus or inspiration, which means that the latter are bound to be seen as having a way of thinking at variance with their own, including different concepts, and belonging to different sects and religions.
Therefore, the first-mentioned people will take a strong aversion to these latter individuals, condemning them and stamping them as the "lost" or "unbelievers" unlike themselves who, according to their own concepts, can represent the only "saved" or "holy ones".
As their faculty of feeling is thus still primitive, and to a high degree appears as expressing tendencies manifesting far from any possible "neighbourly love" or the great commandment: "Love one another", then those tendencies - through the above-mentioned aversion - have a good basis from which to operate, especially as there is
a touch of justification released as they presume that their struggle is against
the children of "sin", or "darkness", or the "Devil" or of "evil", and therefore deserving of punishment and of belonging to the place where there is "
weeping and gnashing of teeth".
All this aversion is for the simple reason that those other people neither want nor are able to allow themselves to be
"converted" to someone else's faith and concept of life.
In short, the aversion takes a form which, to
a sufficiently primitive mentality, will seem to have a touch of justice.
This fact has further activated the aversion of the so-called "believers" for the so-called "non-believers" to such a degree - as we can see throughout history - that it has even resulted in
persecution, burning at the stake, and all kinds of other sufferings.
These acts are really specific sorts of crime when one considers the spirit or true meaning of that great general principle of the old world impulse which invariably encourages peace, by such sayings as: "Put up thy sword, for all they that take the sword will perish with the sword"; "Judge not, that ye be not judged"; "Resist not evil; whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also"; "As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise"; "All men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another"; "Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors"; "A new commandment I give unto you - that ye love one another"; and many more.
As we see, more than sufficient light has been radiated by the old world impulse to encourage peace; that persecutions and crimes of this sort could take place at all is due to the fact that they were perpetrated by people whose mentality has been of so primitive a standard that they allowed themselves to be deceived by that "touch of justice" in those acts of persecution.
The latter had, in reality, become the releasing agent for an eruption of all those lower and not yet mastered characteristics and passions expressing pure and simple intolerance - but naturally, by the people themselves seen as expressing "justice" and "righteous indignation", all "in the name of the Almighty".
All these people thus became releasing agents for the expression the
"hard skin" which (as explained in Section 61) was in some way necessary at the time when the old world impulse had to be spread among barbaric people.
Nowadays, this impulse, on the contrary, is mainly presenting itself to people
as increasingly outdated, and so that old kind of religious zeal released by intolerance becomes difficult to arouse.
This attitude greatly contributes to the fact that people's remaining interest is turning away from the old world impulse, and in this way indirectly causes their receptivity, hopes and longings to move towards a new inspirational power and a new world impulse.
The people in the second category of Group B, in their condition of being so susceptible to suggestion have such an extremely strong tendency towards intolerance that they will also, in their blind religious zeal, be among those who resist the new world impulse.
However,
all people who are under the influence of this impulse should aim at remembering the prayer from the Son of God: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do".
