84. The condition of terrestrial mankind manifests itself largely as "darkness". This darkness is in the first instance the result of the "Fall" or of animal manifestations, and in the second instance this result is of a deeper nature because it develops a knowledge of "good" and "evil". The "Fall" constitutes then, in its deepest or cosmic analysis: "To eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil". As the "Fall" is thus the same as manifesting oneself in contact with the animal life-principle, this said principle is obviously identical with that "tree of knowledge". To manifest "might" instead of "right", "to take rather than to give", to live according to the idea: "Every man for himself" and other expressions of the animal life-principle will all be identical with those "apples" which became "forbidden fruit" during and after the Creative Principle's light radiation came into being, and the enjoyment of which - within the initial area of the said principle - led to "expulsion" from that form of happiness and harmony upon which the animal kingdom is based.
