If one supposes that there were no law governing the reaction of matter and it was impossible for the I to "make mistakes", then this I would naturally be a complete robot and everything which now creates the consciousness, the soul and the life of the I, could not exist. There would be nothing called "fear", "anxiety", "compassion", "hate", "love", "evil" or "good", "beautiful' or "ugly'; everything which gives contrast to life would be non-existent. But without contrast, no kind of sensing would be possible. There would be no form of consciousness, soul, life or existence of any kind. All that which enjoys and delights in the suns, planets and milky ways today throughout the Universe, everything which today lives, breathes and moves upon God's green and sunlit continents, roams in the forests and on the plains and in the oceans, or moves with the current through the rivers, streams and brooks, in fact all places overflowing with life – all this could then only appear as total stillness which is the same as death. But as this "stillness" is the opposite of actual fact, the opposite of reality, then in all eternity it can never be more than just "an imagined opposite to life".
