327. An individual's growth through these two forms of development is the same as passing through what I have described in the first volume of "Livets Bog" as an "evolutionary spiral". The reader is already acquainted with the first of these two realities, for every living being on Earth finds itself just in that part of the spiral where evolution predominates. Less familiar, on the other hand, is "involution", which as we shall see initially takes place on entirely different planes of existence.
      The manifestation of a living being, then, is subject to the eternal rhythm mentioned above. The "super-consciousness" is brought forward from stage to stage throughout the entire spiral-cycle. This phenomenon happens on the basis of the "talent-kernels" within the "fate-element". But as "talent-kernels" can only exist as results of previously practised ways of manifesting and these, in their first beginnings in the form of "A knowledge", could only come about through mentally conscious acts of will, then the present guidance from the "super-consciousness" through different stages and its attraction to, or repulsion from the various energies and substances of those stages, will be the result of that individual's former, day-conscious acts of will or inclinations, even if that present guidance is quite outside his present day-conscious awareness.
      Although the manifestation of the "super-consciousness" is automatic and functions outside an individual's day-consciousness it is nonetheless the fruit, or the result, of this same individual's previous conscious will. However, when this "will" – seated thus in day-consciousness – is in this way the original and deepest cause of the nature and mode of functioning of the "super-consciousness", it now becomes obvious that it is the individual who, through his day-consciousness, creates the future nature and characteristics of his manifestation of "super-consciousness" and not the reverse, just as this same individual, with previous day-consciousness, created the specific faculty of reaction possessed by his present "super-consciousness". Consequently, the nature of the "super-consciousness" is, in reality, only the reactions of a former day-consciousness. The individual's present day-conscious manifestation and acts of will are thus absolutely decisive with regard to how his "super-consciousness" will express itself in a new future physical life. An individual may thus determine now that his future "super-consciousness" will manifest in a perfect way, rendering its originator a genius, but he may also determine now, through day-consciousness, that at a future time his "super-consciousness" will render its originator mentally retarded or ill in his future physical manifestation.
