Memory-energy or bliss-energy. The I's sixth great source of power.
356. But there is still yet another source of power available for the living being's manifestation. It is that by which it can "remember".
As being able to "remember" is also a functional ability, this also shows it to be a function of energy. This energy is "memory-energy". By means of this energy it is possible for the I to create mental "copies" of its experiences and events. In this way it gradually assembles a whole collection of these "copies". It is these "copies" we call "memories". Thus, "memories" are actually also purely material realities created in matter or substance, but this substance is in fact of quite another kind than the physical. It cannot be denied that "memories" are, in a way, created things, and consequently are material realities. It is a fact that they constitute a whole little world of their own. This world is admittedly an "inner world", but nevertheless this does not prevent it from being a world in which an individual can move, can experience various details or might be in a good or a bad mood. This "inner world" is a reflection of the outer world in all its aspects, in another kind of matter. It is in this "inner world" that details are stored from the individual's past. On account of his ability to juggle with such matter, an individual is able to bring his past into the present and can be guided by his former experiences (memories) in making present decisions. In this way these former experiences constitute a firm foundation on which to create his future. Without the "faculty of memory" it would not be possible for development to take place. The individual could never become more clever, just as the concept of the "past" would be an impossibility.
However, without knowing the "past", the idea of a "future" would never come into his consciousness. For it is only through memories of the "past" he has experienced that ideas and hopes about a "future" can exist.
In this way "memory" is a function of energy; and therefore the energy employed may be expressed as "memory-energy".
As all unpleasant or dark elements in the memories become filtered away through this energy so that gradually recollections become far brighter than the actual reality from which they were original "copies" and therefore to an increasing degree affect the individual as "blissful", then in "Livets Bog", this same energy is also called the "energy of bliss". This energy is the I's sixth great source of power.
