Livets Bog, vol. 2
The difficulty of understanding the kingdom of wisdom.
364. It is naturally a matter of course that the kind of existence indicated here will seem fantastic for readers, for it actually deals with all those phenomena lying well in advance of what is factual for terrestrial man today. There was a time when the idea that the Earth could be a globe floating freely in universal space would have been quite incomprehensible and thereby also unbelievable. And that people would reach a point of being able to speak through air-waves and be heard by people on other continents without any visible connection, as can now happen through the radio, this also at one time would have been utterly unthinkable. And is it not the same with so many of the other great technical wonders of today? Indeed, have we not experienced how many fantastic dreams of the imagination have become factual reality? And terrestrial man, through his evolution, will come to see that life always continues to create realities from normal imaginative ideas, that is to say, from the highest dreams common to all people.
A plant of the present time has no ability to understand that one day it will be free of the roots which are holding it to the ground, and in the form of an animal will be able of its own accord to move about unfettered towards the sun and water. And no animal of the present time could understand that a day will come when, in the form of terrestrial man, it will be able to master the elements so that instead of running on its own legs it can use an express train, a motorcar or an aeroplane; or that instead of claws it can create weapons of scientific genius in the form of rifles, grenades and machine guns. And in the same way terrestrial people of today cannot conceive of an existence where they are free from the physical weight of the body and there is no need to overcome the resistance of such heavy materials as granite or metal in order to fulfil their wishes and desires but where, on the contrary, they can have every wish granted and all the necessities of life fulfilled, simply by mastering ethereal or spiritual matter, the densest nature of which can obey, or be dissolved by every intensive concentration of thought.
