The I's withdrawal of consciousness from areas of pain.
374. As pain and suffering of every kind is based on the interacting energies of feeling and gravity and these energies, or this kind of matter, obeys thought only indirectly, then that pain and suffering will only be an indirect experience or manifestation. This should be thought of as a blessing, for as pain and suffering can only exist as an indirect experience, then it can only take place in an individual's "external" world. Consequently he has between him and suffering a whole world to which he can withdraw. If this were not the case "death" would never be a release from pure physical suffering, nor would there be any such thing as "anaesthesia". And "fainting", which is the I's own divine, temporary withdrawal of consciousness from painful circumstances, would also be impossible.
