411. But this kingdom is certainly not a "dead" kingdom. On the contrary, it constitutes the most fundamental expression for the outer result of the living being's whole function of life throughout a spiral's immensity of time and space. It is true that as regards purely physical sensing this result does not indicate that there is any awake day-conscious source activating it, for all movements and functions in the "mineral kingdom" come about independently, but this is surely no proof that these functions are not "manifestations of life". The entire human organism, as well as the bodies of all other living beings, is, so to speak, made up solely of independent functions, that is to say, functions lying outside an individual's present day-conscious will or ability.
      As these functions are expressing logic in the highest degree, which is again the same as expediency, and this again cannot possibly exist on any other basis than that of a desire to fulfil a purpose which should be the final result, it thus becomes obvious that the functions and movements in the "mineral kingdom" are definitely "expressions of life", for desire, of course, can only exist as a characteristic of a living being. Things which are "dead" cannot desire anything, The "mineral kingdom's" immense forces are thus all planned and fulfil a purpose. But who, then, is the instigator of all these purposes? It could not be terrestrial beings. And so obviously these purposes cannot be attributed to beings who manifest themselves in flesh and blood. However, we have also seen with certainty during this analyzing of the spiral zones, that living beings in themselves are masters of all the energies of the spiral intrinsically and thereby are able to create an experience of life or existence in any of the specific zones of energy in any given spiral, and on account of this fact they do indeed prove their own immortality.
      Existence, or this immortal life, cannot possibly exist without being in the form of a triune analysis, that is a manifestation of three definite principles as a single indivisible unit which has been defined as A knowledge, B knowledge and C knowledge; these correspondingly constitute awake day-conscious thought, the transformation of this thought into realistic action, and the repetition of such action until it becomes a habit of mind, and this now provides us with the solution to the riddle of "lifeless" matter. The mysterious "something" we call life has thus three forms in which it reveals itself. Either it exists as a being's thought, or as its conscious manifestation or as its unconscious habitual, that is to say automatic, mode of functioning. And this brings us to the functions which are present in the organisms of beings everywhere in Nature and they are the same automatic functions which manifest themselves everywhere in the "mineral kingdom". Such automatic functions could never in any way have come about without an existence as habitual functions long before. And as the latter could never have come about either except by virtue of previous conscious and awake functions of will, then all functions of the "mineral kingdom" become synonymous with functions of consciousness and are thus incontestably "manifestations of life".
