496. As all "matter" is "light", all experiences are thus the same as experiences of "light". But as experiences of "light" are the same as "seeing", then all experiences or sensory perception is the same as "vision". But only when an experience happens through the eyes are we accustomed to call it "sight". When it comes about through the ear, "light" becomes "sound". If it takes place through the nose, "light" becomes "smell", while if it comes about through the tongue it becomes "taste", and finally it becomes a primitive sensation or "feeling" when it is caused by our organism's direct contact with other energies or "substances". All these forms of sensory perception are just different variations of the same thing. In principle they are all released on exactly the same basis, namely, by the contact of the I's energies with other energies. The same applies if an experience comes about through senses higher than the physical ones. In such cases we call it neither "smell", "taste" nor "hearing". Yet it often happens that this kind of experience is called a "vision", though usually only with symbolic meaning, the ordinary term for that experience being a "psychical" or "spiritual" experience. Any form of experience, whether it is psychical, spiritual or physical, is therefore identical with the reaction of the I's energies contacting other energies.
