501. We now see from the above that when an ordinary terrestrial being considers something as "dark", this does not imply that it really is "dark", but on the contrary, that the object in question belongs to a lower level on the "scale of light" than that of the being himself; had it belonged to a degree higher on the scale, that being would have considered it "light".
As terrestrial beings find themselves at very different levels on the "scale of light", they also have very different degrees, both above and below those levels. Those degrees that are higher for some, can thus be lower for others. Consequently, the substance considered by some as "light" may also be considered by certain others as "dark", and vice versa. And it is this primitive basic perception that lies at the root of everything which can be described as "dissention". The ordinary terrestrial person has not any actual knowledge of the nature of "levels of substance" or "levels of light". In many situations, therefore, he believes that other people should think, evaluate and act in the same way as he does himself. As this is impossible for all beings at lower stages, as they are not on the same level or have the same attitude as those on a higher level and thus cannot have the same viewpoint, then we have reached the initial cause of war and the basis of all suffering, in other words the formation of a fate of darkness.
