Livets Bog, vol. 2
When the "animal" is transformed into the "human being".
508. The whole existence of a living being is thus a "cosmic chemical process". In the first zones of the spiral this process comes about automatically or as a habitual function. Only when the being begins to appear as an "animal" and can act day-consciously of its own accord, will its conscious struggle with matter begin both physically and mentally. Through this struggle there arise experiences which gradually transform the "animal" into the "human being". It is within this transition that terrestrial man is situated at present. Therefore he has in his consciousness, or mentality, areas where he is raised more or less above the "animal" and areas where he is still fully at the level of the "animal". As we have pointed out before in "Livets Bog", he constitutes a hybrid creature in a transition between an "animal" and a "human being".
We will now proceed to analyse this creature's fundamental thought-climates and thus come to realize where it is "animal" and where it is "human". With the possession of this understanding it should be somewhat easier for readers to acquire the ability to compound their thought-energies into those combinations which will inevitably result in the perfect mode of behaviour or creation of total "cosmic consciousness" in their own being.
