The basic solution to the mystery of life No. 7 - The I is "something" which is not an effect of a preceding cause.
565. Matter or substances and the causes and effects inherent in them thus reveal a "something" which constitutes the individual's innermost "Self" or "I" and thereby differs from matter or substances and the energies connected with them in that, unlike these, it is not an effect of some pre-existent factor, but on the contrary, can only be the "cause" of something coming after. This ensuing factor is the "creative faculty" of the living being in question and the manifestation produced by that means, that is to say, creation and experience. If this "something" did not exist before these realities, one would have to accept that the "creator" was a product of "that which is created", which is the opposite of very the facts of life. No one has ever seen that a house has created a builder, only that a builder has created a house. This "creator" or the "Self" is thus the "primary cause" of that combination of phenomena which appears as a "living being". This is the basic solution No. 7 to the mystery of life.
