Why one can cut one's hair and nails without pain.
598. While "dead" matter (mineral matter) constitutes combinations of energy which are still not yet "day-consciously" experienced by the instigators, then "living" matter (animal matter) constitutes combinations of energy in which their instigators are fully "day-conscious". By means of these tiny beings' awake "day-conscious" orientation in matter, it becomes possible, as we have seen, for them to pass on that orientation to the "day-consciousness" of a macro-I, which would have been impossible if the tiny I's were not "day-conscious" in that particular matter. For example we see this in "mineral matter", for as the micro-I's are not "day-conscious" in this matter then there is nothing for them to pass on to the macro-I and therefore the latter experiences neither distaste nor delight in that matter. So this is the reason why we can cut our hair and trim our nails and drill into teeth without actually noticing anything particular. If it is noticeable it is because in some way one has approached too close to animal matter, the reaction of which then is mistakenly experienced as coming from the mineral area in question.
