But just as we have seen from the above that there are steps leading up from the cold, unfeeling, purely materialistic terrestrial person, towards higher moral or cultural spheres, so there are also steps leading downwards from the stage of that same being towards lower, or more and more primitive forms of life-experience. Thus, as readers of "Livets Bog" already know, they lead down towards the steps for that experience of life we call the "plant kingdom". From there they lead still further back until we come to that ocean of automatic expressions of life known to us as the "mineral kingdom". And here we see that all known forms of life – that is beings – are to be found in the middle of a "cycle". This "cycle" is also known to readers from earlier analyses in "Livets Bog" as the "spiral". All beings "journey" or "move" one after the other, through this "cycle". That this "journey" or "movement" does indeed take place is proved as a fact by the reality we call "evolution". But as already mentioned, this "cycle" cannot come about without there being a culmination of "hunger" and a culminating "satiation". And we see also that the "spiral" constitutes in the same way a wholly complete experience of "hunger" and "satiation". This "hunger" becomes evident in the "spiral" by the intense craving of terrestrial people for a "better condition" than their present one. This is shown strongly by their longing for ideals. And evolution shows us that they do attain them; for if they did not, the "cycle" would come to a standstill, for this "cycle" is promoted exclusively by beings' "hunger" and "satiation".
