The living being's eternally changing mental states of hunger and satiation are the basis for its changing abode in the cycle or spiral. The living being's "cosmic respiration"
610. Thus, a being's place on the spiral is determined wholly by its particular "hunger" manifesting at the time. That it is placed precisely there where that "hunger" can be "satiated" can only be the most perfect and thereby the most loving circumstance. The reason why the being at any moment has exactly this or that specific "hunger" which makes him a "saint" or a "demon", or makes him create mental light or mental darkness will altogether depend on his previous "satiation" with the contrast to his present condition. If this were not so, genuine death or extinction in reality would be his certain fate. But thanks to the laws of love, his certain fate can only constitute an "eternal life" which again is the same as "eternal experience". In this experience there is found no other decisive factor whatsoever than the being's own I and the connected primordial desire. It is through this primordial desire's appearance in the form of automatic functioning or "C knowledge" that the states of "hunger" and "satiation" are released. This eternally alternating condition may be likened to an eternal "respiration". This "cosmic breathing" is thus the same as its instigator's eternal yearning for "satiation" with the actual contrast to the mental "satiation" he is at the moment experiencing.
