627. From "Livets Bog" we already know about the three kinds of beings. We have learned from Symbol No. 3 and its text that the first category are people who sense and experience largely through "feeling". Their intelligence is still not to any great extent taken into the service of religious matters, though it is used by these beings to a high degree in the service of a materialistic and economically orientated life. In the area of religion these people will be "believers", and as they still lack the talent for love their belief will make them fanatic in areas of mind and spirit. They are quite unable to use common sense or intelligence where religion is concerned. They consider themselves to be the "one and only elect" and consequently pass ruthless judgement or punishment on all their fellow beings who think differently; in this way they create a kind of more or less pronounced and brutal campaign of persecution against all such persons.
      As appears in previous descriptions of these categories of beings, they consist of many subdivisions or groups. We will not refer to them again here but simply state collectively that these beings are the instigators of the initial leading thought-climate of the community of terrestrial people. As this thought-climate – in its principle form – is borne by "feeling", while intelligence only plays a very modest role, in "Livets Bog" we will call it the "climate of feeling". Seen from the point of view of "cosmic chemistry", this climate comprises some of the material, substance or matter which many terrestrial people employ in creating their daily life and consciousness and their behaviour relating to everything around them.
      As in this climate a very minor role is played by intelligence then naturally the reactions of this climate will, to a great extent, collide with the guiding logic of world-laws. And therefore this gives rise to mental "natural catastrophes", such as an all-prevailing "intolerance", "religious persecution", "religious coercion", "inquisition", fanatical forms of worship towards the god or gods accepted by those beings and to dogmas of belief connected with them. Another characteristic of these beings is the immense trail of lesser ways for transferring the same tendencies of mind over to more general phenomena in daily life. Thus, we also meet the same intolerant, fanatic pursuit of this attitude in political events, in the details of marriage and sexual morality, and it is this same fanaticism, or unintelligent and thus uncontrolled condition of feeling, which make the consciousness of these beings an open highway for revenge, envy, jealousy and all the other exhibitions of thoughtless egoism and selfishness.
      It is, of course, obvious that this kind of thought-climate could never in any circumstances "save" the world or liberate the community of terrestrial people from suffering. For that they are in too high a degree devoid of genuine unselfish sympathy or absolute love.
