628. Thus we have before us a wide zone of existence where, day after day, millions of people are born, live and create their fate and "die" without ever coming to the understanding that their particular zone of consciousness constitutes but a single "dwelling in the Father's house", a single little province in God's immense all-embracing kingdom. Therefore it often happens that in their earthly life they are ready to "stone" all those beings who belong to other mental provinces and therefore may speak a different mental language and have other spiritual and moral principles and customs. It should, however, be noted that this state of thinking, like all others, has its place in the cycle or spiral and therefore is indicating a scale of steps from primitivity to more perfect forms. If this zone did not exist, there would certainly be a link missing in that scale, a hole, an abyss with no bridge across. At the same time, this zone is actually assisting in the fulfilment of the satiation of hunger which has led those beings out of the "kingdom of bliss" and away from the light. This zone constitutes something of a contrast to the "divine world's" supreme light, a contrast which those beings themselves desired and hungered for when, in their heavenly state, they had become satiated with "bliss". In this way that zone's mutual, local disharmony will not be at variance with the world-structure's absolutely logical conclusion "Everything is very good". At the same time it must also be recognized that within its own sphere and in its highest manifestation, that zone can present so much beauty that it can well be expressed as an "ecclesiastical shrine". This "shrine" consists of religious temples and churches with their accompanying artistic embellishments, altars, candles, sacraments, swelling organ music, choir singing, ceremonies and sermons.
But these performances cannot "save" the world. They are just the details of a single zone in the great Universe. This zone is only a "sphere of feeling" and even at its peak of manifestation can only lift people up to a higher "frame of mind". It can only give them dogmas of faith instead of knowledge and therefore can never be of any real satisfaction for beings who have not been predestined for that zone and do not belong there. These beings who are hungering and thirsting for knowledge, for realistic facts, these beings who are hungering to see God in flesh and blood, and to see moral laws which are identical with the absolutely inevitable laws of Nature, in this zone can gather only "stones for bread".
