633. But after the darkest night there follows the clearest day and so it is with the case we have here. In the sphere of terrestrial people, in the zone of the killing principle a new thought-climate has long since begun to take effect. This climate is verging on a harmonization of intelligence and feeling. This harmonization is brought about by a change as the individual's capacity of thinking and sensing passes through the experience of suffering, i.e. all the darkness in the occurrences and circumstances of the killing principle. As the individuals' "heroic" ideals and morality in this zone has continuously, through a succession of earthly lives, been based on killing, and the beings in question exist entirely on sowing consternation, suffering, oppression and murder among inferior beings, whether human or animal, then it is not possible for such individuals themselves to continue evading the consequences. No kind of compassionate or loving paradise could possibly exist in a zone where the most beautiful ideals are bloodthirsty, whether in the form of favourite dishes or acts of revenge. And as the eternal laws of the cycle determine that every energy must inevitably return to the I or centre of life which is its source and from which it originally emanated, then the more those ideals are practised, the greater becomes the individual's "hell" in this zone. This means that in reality it will be he himself who is hit by his revenge, his bloodthirstiness and murderous tendencies. And with this incessant confrontation with darkness and suffering in his own flesh and blood, he will at last try to find or reason out the unknown cause of his darkest fate. And this speculation will bring him to make many experiments in creating moral principles in life. Some of these attempts will give positive results and make for a certain kind of peace and harmony, while others, again, will fail, producing suffering and thereby disappointments and depression. But as long as the suffering and the consequent pessimism about life still exists, the being will tirelessly continue to speculate about the reason for that suffering. His life and the whole of his existence will gradually come to express that one single enormous question – "Why?'
