716. We therefore see that the unsatisfied longings are actually every bit as ordinary a phenomenon as ordinary hunger. The fact that the former hunger does not occur in existence in order to constitute something evil or something with which to torture the beings is something we gain a living acknowledgment of to the extent that it becomes clearer and clearer to us that it constitutes a reality that absolutely must precede the creation of every sense of well-being, since this can exist only in the form of a satisfaction, and this in turn can exist only on the basis of a preceding dissatisfaction, which is actually the same as hunger or longing. Hunger, longing or dissatisfaction can therefore exist only as a preceding, absolute prerequisite for the creation of any kind of well-being whatsoever. All unsatisfied wishes or longings in the individuals thereby constitute a preparatory foundation for the creation of a future well-being. But since, as we have previously mentioned, there occur in the individuals so many wishes and longings that are not satisfied in their present life – and this lack of satisfaction is clearly a firm factor in the beings' analysis and not merely an accidental, abnormal phenomenon in one single being – this confirms it as a fact that there therefore exists in the mentality of the beings today an absolutely unavoidable basis that prepares the way for the creation of a future well-being, that is to say a well-being that lies beyond "death" and the "grave". All unsatisfied wishes and longings or all forms of unsatisfied mental hunger therefore constitute the unbreakable threads or ties that, after the destruction of the physical organism, connect the being's present existence with an experience of life that continues into the future.
