774. Above this substance there exists only the I and its superconsciousness. As we have already mentioned, in this superconsciousness the "primordial desire" has its origin and main centre. Here it appears as partly "material" and partly "immaterial". The fact that it is "immaterial" means that it crosses over and, as previously mentioned, becomes identical to that which is "not created". It becomes equivalent to "something no. 1", where it has no other analysis than that "it is". In this state it does not yet express any form of life whatsoever. We must therefore continue our observation where it begins its mission as an expression of life. In its appearance as "primordial desire" it constitutes the I's first sense of life. This sense reaches the I's consciousness in the form of what we call "desire". This in turn constitutes an attraction towards already existing matter, substances or created things and is perceived as wishes, longings or desires, or in other words as everything that comes under the concept of "hunger". One must understand that in principle "hunger" does not apply only to purely material foodstuffs but of course includes everything to do with the individual's attraction to matter. We will therefore in "Livets Bog" use the expression "hunger" as a general term for all desire.
      As "primordial desire", from the superconsciousness down through the subconsciousness, finds its outlet as "hunger", this phenomenon constitutes, after the "primordial desire", life's next means of expression. We will therefore register "hunger" as "life substance no. 2".
