930. At this point the reader may well protest that life is not only joy. But we should point out that it is precisely the so-called "joyless" or "unhappy" experiences or sensations of life that we refer to as the black or dark nuances in the scale of sensations. But, as we have already pointed out, all these nuances are absolutely necessary factors in the process of experience – without them we would be unable to experience culmination or rest – and consequently their existence in their ultimate analysis can in reality be equivalent only to the foundation of every form of ability to experience genuine happiness or bliss. If they did not exist, absolute death would reign in the universe. As the innermost nature of their existence is therefore equivalent to details in the creation of joy and happiness, it is clear that, from a cosmic viewpoint, all dark tendencies of the consciousness are materials of joy or details of joy and can therefore, from a cosmic viewpoint, be expressed as nuances in the sensation of joy. They determine the degree of culture, variation, taste and colour in the sensation of joy or the experience of life. That they are felt as unpleasant does not alter their true identity as something "good". And this is why in "Livets Bog" we express the details of life as constituting exclusively the "pleasant good" and the "unpleasant good". Everything that exists thus expresses one or another form or degree of "good". And it is precisely this circumstance that proves the divine, cosmic answer: "Everything is very good" to be a fact.
