933. But it is not only the highest and most pleasurable sensation of life, and thereby of the Godhead, that the individual can experience through the "receiving" and "giving out" of energy. The individual can also through the same factors experience the exact opposite, namely the culmination of "unpleasantness", "hell" itself, or an experience of life in which the "image of God" or the sensation of the Godhead is totally obliterated, and the being is groping about in pitch-black labyrinths in which everything is drowned out by "weeping and gnashing of teeth", death-rattles and tormented shrieking. This unhappy state will always be present to a greater or lesser extent wherever two beings' "receiving" and "giving out" of their energy is not in harmony, and where it is not what both partners mutually desire. We will call this state "life substance no. 10".
      We are therefore able to see life around us as both the culmination of happiness and unhappiness and as stages between these two extremes. And all the living beings that are not at the culmination of happiness are thus more or less unhappy, just as the beings that are not at the culmination of unhappiness are more or less happy. The experience of life appears in degrees and thereby, as already mentioned, appears with a wealth of details, with a wealth of contrasts and is thereby richly coloured.
