946. Without this subconsciousness any form of manifestation or creation, and thereby any form of life-experience, would be ruled out.
The subconsciousness thus constitutes a terrain that belongs to the individual but that lies outside the superconsciousness.
This terrain borders immediately onto the outwardly visible, and to the individual, foreign surroundings.
The individual therefore meets these foreign energies (the outer surroundings, Nature, the impact of the fellow beings etc.) directly with its "subconsciousness".
But as this meeting is the same as the meeting between two types of energy, namely, the energy of the surroundings and the energy of the individual, it becomes clear that the result of this meeting will be a reaction.
This reaction will in turn be a victory for either the foreign energy or the individual's energy.
If it is a victory for the foreign energy, the individual will sense it as "unpleasantness", "pain" or "misfortune", whereas the individual will sense it as "pleasantness", "well-being" or "good fortune" if the meeting is a victory for the individual's energy.
And this brings us to the two great fundamental factors in all experience of life or in every form of sensory perception, namely, the mental sensation of light and the mental sensation of darkness, out of which all other forms of contrasts in life are manifested.
These two factors, the sense of "unpleasantness" and the sense of "pleasantness", we will define as "life substance no. 30 and no. 31" respectively.
In turn these two factors together constitute the basis of all experience or sensory perception, namely the "principle of contrast", which will in turn be defined as "life substance no. 32".
Between the I's superconsciousness and its external surroundings (Nature, its fellow beings etc.) we find the I's "subconsciousness".
It is here in the subconsciousness, or in the terrain that lies between the superconsciousness and the external surroundings that the meeting takes place between the energies from the outer surroundings and the energies from within the talent kernels in the superconsciousness or the fate element, and it is consequently here that the reactions of this meeting take place.
It is here that the reactions are revealed to the individual as greater or lesser nuances of "unpleasantness" or "pleasantness".
The subconsciousness is therefore the theatre of the experience of life, the stage of the I's life.
