956. If the individual wishes for things that represent the desire for annihilation, this wish would be abnormal and can have arisen only as the result of a defect in the mental organs, thus making the final wish the product of a mental disability. But as thoughts are the same as ideas, thoughts that are the product of mental disability, and that are therefore defective, must be the same as "false ideas". Such "false ideas" include the negation of the being's "free will" on the grounds that it is, for example, unable to use its will or words to compel or render its own organism exempt from the destruction that is usually defined by terrestrial human beings as "death". The fact that the being is unable to satisfy such or similar wishes in no way refutes the aforementioned complete "free will", which in its deepest analysis the I possesses. For such wishes are an assault directed towards things that are totally immune to assault, namely the eternal "something" or the I. As this "something" is neither substance nor matter, it is not subject to the laws of matter, and equally it does not belong to the category of things that can be created or destroyed, and cannot therefore be subject to the laws of "created" things either. It constitutes the "creative principle" itself and is the "creator" itself. But the "creator" cannot destroy itself; only what it has created can it dissolve, destroy or transform. As creation can consist of nothing other than a transformation of matter, every wish that is in reality aimed at a transformation of something that is not matter, for example the "divine something" or the I, must be a delusion.
So here the thought or will is directed towards something that cannot form the material through which it can be carried out. Here there is nothing to transform or change. And as a result the being cannot have its will fulfilled and consequently feels "bound" and powerless, experiencing the "disappointment" that this brings about. This "disappointment" is thus the reaction of the mental disability. It is its pain or unpleasantness. This abnormal sensation is the inevitable result of the effects of an abnormal idea.
