How it becomes evident that "created things" are "illusions"
1056. What we express as "animals" or "human beings" are thus merely local phenomena occurring in the eternal existence of living beings, just as precisely the same is the case with what is expressed by all other ordinary kinds of concepts in daily life. If we say a being is beautiful or less beautiful, large or small, highly developed or primitive, these words apply only to its organism and manifestation of consciousness. It is the combination of matter and the organisation of energy released through this that is beautiful or less beautiful, large or small, highly developed or primitive and so on. The living being or "eternal something" exists quite outside every single one of these phenomena since it existed both before, at the same time as and after the existence of the individual phenomenon. And since this existence outside the phenomenon is "eternity", the brief period of time in which the phenomenon existed can be only of such little weight or significance that it counts for absolutely nothing in relationship to the enormous panorama that constitutes the rest of the living being's existence. In the rest of this existence lies the eternal cycle of the principle of life, and thereby phenomena that to an equally great extent express the opposite of the phenomena that constitute the present physical and mental appearance of the living being. If the nature of this appearance is such that we express it as evil, primitive or devilish, then – according to the eternal laws of the principle of cycles that form the eternal existence of the being as a movement from darkness to light and from light to darkness in this eternal existence that lies outside the being's present physical and mental appearance – there will inevitably be phenomena through which the same eternal being has manifested the opposite of its present appearance, and where this must be regarded as being equally good, high-intellectual or divine as the opposite that it is now. And it is by virtue of this that the phenomena of its present physical and mental appearance become illusory. Something that is at the same time just as good as it is evil, just as intellectual as it is primitive, and just as devilish as it is divine, is of course neither evil nor good, neither primitive nor high-intellectual, neither devilish nor divine. Its eternal nature can be only "X".
