1124. The fact that the "terrestrial parent principle" can be represented only by two beings and not by one, as is the case with the "superterrestrial parent principle", immediately reduces the "living being's" capacity of the consciousness. For example, in this state it cannot possibly fulfil the law of existence that demands that "thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself". Since one of the two poles occurs merely in a latent form there will be something lacking in the experience of consciousness itself. The being cannot love its "own sex" at all, which thus means, those beings that have the same pole in a latent state as it has. The fact is that such a being cannot fill in or make good the deficiency, which in turn means the "hunger" to which the latent pole gives rise, since this being suffers from the same "hunger". If the being's masculine pole is developed and active, and its feminine pole is in a latent state, it will feel an urge or hunger to conquer and possess, to lead and control, to protect and defend. And one will here understand that if a plane of existence was filled exclusively with beings of this type there would be no possibility whatsoever for satisfying this urge, craving or hunger. There would, on the contrary, be an unmistakeable prerequisite for creating terrible disharmony, unrest and bloodshed between the beings. There would be no particular bright spot in such a plane of existence. For in order to satisfy their hunger the beings would have to conquer one another by force and thrust their protection and dictatorship upon the conquered being, a protection and dictatorship that the conquered being would not have desired at all, since it itself is filled with the urge to protect, order and command.
But this, however, is fortunately not the case. Life creates no longing or urge whatsoever in the being without at the same time creating the possibility of satisfying it. And this satisfaction becomes possible through the beings of the "opposite pole", which thus means, beings in whom the "feminine pole" is dominating and active. At their peak such beings feel a longing, hunger or urge that is the complete opposite of the "masculine" being's hunger. It feels the urge to be defended or protected; it feels an urge to submit to the will of a superior force and let it be directed by this force. We see thus that "living beings" here constitute two types, both of which are formed so as to be the absolute satisfaction of the opposite type's desire, longing and craving. That these types of being are thereby created exclusively in order to desire one another is here evident. And since they thus mutually determine the satisfaction of their highest desires, it is equally evident that they are created in order to admire and please one another.
