But if the unintellectual or primitive being cannot understand a high-intellectual interpretation of the truth it must, of course, be given a less intellectual explanation, which means, an interpretation of the truth specifically adapted to the intellectual barrenness of its step, without its innermost basic analysis being impaired in the process, thus rendering it "untrue". The high-intellectual analysis of the absolute truth is life's strongest light. And ordinarily the eye, the most distinguished organ through which one can sense the light of day, must of course be adapted to the light. This adaptation takes place through the dilation and contraction of the pupil. When the eye meets light that is too strong, it becomes dazzled until the pupil has contracted so much that the light can be tolerated and one can see, just as the opposite is the case when one suddenly meets a light that is not so strong. Here too the faculty of sight is weakened until the pupil has dilated so much that there is again contact between the being's faculty of sight and the light. In the first case everything becomes light without details, while in the latter case everything becomes darkness without details. And it is precisely this principle that also holds true in the living being's view and experience of the all-penetrating eternal light of the absolute truth. When the being in the spiral's great divine mental zone of light (the divine world) begins to be drawn towards the antitheses of this light, which means, towards the zone of the highest culmination of mental darkness (the animal kingdom or the domain of the principle of killing), it cannot see the details of the "darkness" in the first zones either until its senses have completed a slow "adaptation". But gradually, as the "adaptation" to the darkness proceeds, darkness disperses, and the details of its zones are revealed. When the being is again drawn from the zones of darkness towards the regions of light it cannot immediately see the details of the light either until the adaptation has gradually progressed. And here the principle of the physical faculty of sight is repeated for us in the spiral cycle itself. Its main principle thus constitutes merely an "adaptation to light" and an "adaptation to darkness".
