1179. What was it then that the incipient life here ("Adam" and "Eve" before the Fall) was satiated with? What did they loathe? Was it not precisely "the eating of the fruit of the other trees in the garden"? But the "other trees in the garden" could of course in the absolute sense be only that which during the experience of life or the cycle was a contrast to "the eating of the tree of knowledge", which thus in turn means, the experience of the manifestation of the killing principle, the consumption of meat and blood, the feeling of hatred or revenge, "killing" one's neighbour instead of "giving him life". What else could it be? But as "Adam" and "Eve" (the first, feeble, incipient form of life on Earth) felt a hunger or a desire for the killing principle, it is hereby established as fact that they were satiated with the opposite of, or the contrast to, the killing principle, namely love, that is, universal love or neighbourly love. This form of life was thus degenerating in "Adam" and "Eve". And so the "Bible" expresses and confirms "Livets Bog's" cosmic analyses of the cycle or the spiral. It of course tells us here, albeit in a way adapted to the simple or the as-yet cosmically primitive being, that the life beginning on Earth has had a "past", and that this "past" cannot have had its real culminatory domain on the Earth itself. All incipient physical life on the Earth is degenerating spiritual life that is heading down towards a material, physical culmination. It is concentrated on longing for or desiring the opposite of neighbourly love, this invariably resulting in the development of "selfishness", which in turn is the life blood of the so-called animal "drive for self-preservation" that still dominates all terrestrial, physical life.
