The "harem marriage" is brutal and devoid of perfect happiness
1214. This authorised or legalised "adultery" is brutal and barbaric since it neither occurs on an equal footing with the wife nor gives her equal freedom in such a make-believe "marriage", where she has even sometimes been stolen by force or abducted from the person she herself would have preferred to have given her heart to or have been "one flesh" with. Why are these wives so strongly guarded? Why does this guard consist of eunuchs or men who have been castrated? Why are these wives locked up at all? It does not suggest that any of these women are particularly inclined to be "one flesh" with their "husband". It does not suggest a particularly outstanding "honeymoon" or truly natural "period of marriage". It does not suggest that their "husband" is the one-hundred-per-cent satisfaction of their particular marital desire or sexual hunger. If that were the case, it would render totally superfluous all the guards, the fact that these guards had to consist of eunuchs, and the very incarceration of the wives.
