1217. It is patently obvious that the wives of a poor man who practises "polygamy" do not have natural conditions either for the satisfaction of their lives' most profound needs. That "polygamy" is not the perfect fulfilment of the principle of marriage has thus here become established as fact. Its opposite, "polyandry" (one woman's marriage with several men), has of course nothing to do with the absolutely "perfect marriage" either, but is similarly a symptom of the degeneration of marriage. "Monogamy" remains the only way in which the divinity of marriage can be revealed and experienced to the greatest possible extent. Only a marriage of one husband with one wife can give the full experience of being "one flesh" with the spouse. That this experience is gradually becoming more and more a mere repetition of a past state for the advanced human being does not of course prevent the divine feeling and blessing of marriage from being experienced fully by the spouses as long as the repetition lasts. That other absolutely vital layers of consciousness, with their desires and tendencies, subsequently appear and make their presence felt in one or other of the spouses, or in them both, thereby reducing to a corresponding extent their capacity for marriage, are analyses that must inevitably be contributory factors in the forming of the future marital morality of the beings. With their development and understanding of this, the beings will be able to sustain the "period of companionship" that follows the "period of marriage" (the honeymoon) basing it wholly on a divine principle of freedom and neighbourly love, and thereby creating a bright and friendly life together that can be nothing but a blessing for themselves and an unforgettably beautiful and harmonious childhood home for any children they may have.
