The reaction of the living being as "substance" to its surroundings can be culminating "love" or culminating "hatred", these two forms of reaction being the extreme poles of all reaction or manifestation of energy in the universe

1267. The collected reactions of this being can be a culminating sensation of pleasure, promoting health and well-being in those around it, and we then call this being's behaviour "love". And this is thus the very highest combination or creation of harmonious reaction of "substance" or energy that can be produced among the I's' various ways of combining the "energies" or "substances". But the collected reactions of the living being to those around it can also be a kind of all-destroying poison or explosive that disintegrates, corrodes, destroys and shatters all other "combinations of energies or substances" in those around the being in question. It is this reaction that we have come to know as "hatred". And in this form of energy or reaction we have the absolute limit for what disharmonious "substances" can be created. The two "kinds of substance" or reactions mentioned above are thus the two extreme poles, or the highest and the lowest step, of all existing reaction or manifestation of energy in existence or the universe.
