Each and every living being constitutes a "combination of substances", whose reactions show that it constitutes a particular degree of "hatred-substance" or "love-substance" for those around them
1268. Between these two extremes there are, of course, intermediary stages for the reaction of substances. These intermediary stages will more or less resemble the lowest stage depending on whether it is the "disharmonious reaction", that is "hatred", that predominates, while in the same way of course they will resemble the highest stage for reaction depending on whether it is the "harmonious reaction", that is "love", that predominates in the stages concerned. And because of this the living beings appear as representatives of various steps. Each step is characterised by its specific point of balance between "hatred" and "love". A point of balance between "hatred" and "love" must here be understood as the specific combination of "substances" or energies that can elicit precisely the degree of "hatred" and "love" that is demanded in order that an I, in this combination, can have a sense of normal well-being and the natural joy in living arising from this. For some I's, happiness and joy in living is thus when "hatred" predominates in their "manifestation" of energy or "substance", just as it is important for the joy in living of other I's that "love" predominates in their collected combination of substances or manifestation of energy in reaction to those around them. All living beings thus come to constitute specific combinations of "substances" whose collected reactions thus show a particular degree of "hatred" or "love". They thus constitute to a corresponding degree "substances of hatred" or "substances of love" for those around them.
