Livets Bog, vol. 4
Why the eternal life of the living being must take the form of a passage descending into the valleys of darkness and ascending towards the pinnacles of light
1294. But we have seen that this passage descending into darkness is in reality a road ascending towards the pinnacles of light. We have seen that this entire passage is an indispensable link in the divine process of creation and that, without this link, there would be no ability to experience the highest pinnacles of light, indeed, without this "zone of death" no "pinnacles of light" would exist at all. In order for there to be pinnacles there must be a corresponding chasm or valley. So out of absolute necessity the eternal technique of creation or the divine world plan must maintain the manifestation of a "valley of death" in order that "pinnacles of light" can be registered. And the deeper the valley, the higher the pinnacles there must be. And so the Godhead's eternal life and that of the son of God exist only by maintaining a permanent valley and corresponding peaks or pinnacles. The eternal life of the son of God must therefore take the form of a passage descending into a valley, in order that he can see the local details of darkness there at close hand, and ascending to the pinnacles in order that he can have the local details of these pinnacles at close hand there. He must thus descend into the valley in order to become a genius at "looking upwards", and ascend to the pinnacles in order to be able to become a genius at "looking downwards". And it is this passage that the readers here in Livets Bog have already become acquainted with as the "spiral cycle".
