Which of the two mental directions, "democracy" and "communism", is the right one?
1345. The most refined or brilliant, crystallised consequence of all these different sects, communities and parties, which are more or less a mixture of the forces of the old heathen world impulse and of the new world impulse, is what is beginning to emerge in terrestrial human daily life as what we know as "democracy" and "communism". The problem then is which of these two "political" or mental directions – the "democratic" or the "communist" – is the right one. And the answer must then inevitably be that neither of these two directions, such as they appear today, are completely right or completely wrong. Both directions supplement one another to some extent in the areas where they represent the spirit of community or solidarity, where they together constitute the real way to pure, noble and true "communism". Even though all the many "political" parties that exist today appear under just as many names as there are parties, they can all in the main be classed under forces that ultimately must crystallise into the above-mentioned two "political" directions. It is not possible for any other "political" directions to develop and endure among terrestrial mankind, for the basis of their evolution is the old, dark world impulse, which is now dying. And to the extent that this impulse is dying, the light world impulse of neighbourly love will of course promote without hindrance the complete evolution of "communism" and "democracy" in their purest forms.
