Why war or mental darkness cannot be combated using weapons
1378. War, that is the manifestation of mental darkness or lack of love, is thus an organic phenomenon in mankind inherited or brought with it from the beings' passage through the regions of the ordinary animals in the spiral of evolution. And this is the very reason why it cannot be combated with weapons. Since an organic phenomenon in a being's organism or mentality can be nothing but "C-knowledge", which means, habitual consciousness, war, by virtue of the fact that it is an organic function, can in itself also be nothing but "habitual consciousness". But if it is "habitual consciousness", it has become a state of mind, and a state of mind cannot be affected by physical, technical or chemical weapons. It is an organic tendency in the living being in the same way as brown eyes and black hair are an organic tendency in some beings, at the same time as blue eyes and fair hair are an organic tendency in others. It would be just as foolish to believe that the organic tendency that is the basis for the colour of the hair and the eyes could be changed by means of firearms or other sophisticated murder weapons, as it would be to believe that the organic tendency or the physical causes in mankind's consciousness that trigger war can be changed by means of these sophisticated physical weapons. The outer physical effects of this organic tendency can of course be destroyed or kept in check by means of physical or chemical weapons, but the organic tendency itself cannot be wiped out by means of them, the organic tendency being of course the actual mental cause of the phenomenon. Blue eyes and brown eyes, as well as fair hair and dark hair, would still lend colour to the faces of new human beings.
