Why "neighbourly love" is the absolutely highest ideal that will save the world, and why a lack of "neighbourly love" is the "root of all evil"
1383. It is not so surprising that all mankind's greatest leaders, with the world redeemers at the head, have referred to this mental attitude as the ideal that will save the world. Has it not now been established as an unshakeable truth for us, substantiated by the entire weight of the universe, that "neighbourly love" and the "peace", harmony, wellbeing and happiness for all living beings that inevitably ensues from it is the absolutely unshakeable goal of evolution, Nature or the divine world plan itself for terrestrial human beings? How could they otherwise come to be "God's image after His likeness"? Was it not a lack of "neighbourly love" that brought about all the phenomena that caused the decay of every culture, characterising them with corpses and bloodshed, mutilation, torture and disablement? Was it not a lack of "neighbourly love" that caused so many of the world's great cities and cultural centres to be reduced to heaps of rubble and become an arena for all kinds of hardship, misery and amorality? Is it not a lack of "neighbourly love" when thousands or millions of people the world over are forced into destitution because they cannot find employment? Is it not a lack of "neighbourly love" when every state or nation must maintain standing armies and navies armed with modern military equipment or sophisticated machines of murder? Is it not a lack of "neighbourly love" that stipulates that all doors must be locked, things of value must be hidden in steel safes, and all property, private as well as public, must be fenced in by some kind of "barbed wire"? Is it not also a lack of "neighbourly love" that stipulates that a standing police force must be maintained to protect the rights, life and security of individual citizens? Is it not a lack of "neighbourly love" when society still finds it necessary to have "capital punishment" and other authorised forms of punishment and retribution? Indeed, is it not evident from this that without "neighbourly love" there can be no real culture, no real humaneness? Any culture, civilisation, form of real "peace" and general happiness, and the ensuing joy in living, depends on "neighbourly love". "Neighbourly love" is thus the supreme foundation of life itself and will therefore become the most profound object, the highest goal and the most desirable ideal of all future research or development of intellect.
