Livets Bog, vol. 4
Why the manifestation of the world plan has incurred loss of life and loss of people's use of their limbs, as well as torture, mutilation, sorrow and tears, in other words, all forms of darkness, and yet is one-hundred-per-cent "love"
1387. The entire great panorama of evolution has of course shown an astounding, elaborate logic, which means that it has shown supreme, systematic planning to the advantage of the living being, and meticulous loving care in order to lead it to knowledge. It is true that this evolution has cost the loss of life and limb, and has to a great extent involved torture, mutilation, hatred, bitterness, sorrow, tears, death pangs, abnormalities, mental illness and so on, but without these phenomena there would be nothing to indicate or define the opposite. With which other phenomena could the true light, the true life, the immortality and identity of the beings as "sons of God" be defined? Is it not the black lines on the white paper that define the drawing? Would it be visible if there were no trace of contrast? Would its form have a firm foundation if it consisted of white lines on equally white paper without a trace of shadows of any sort? Could the greatest of all art forms – life itself and the being in "God's image" – be an exception to this? How and through what can this become a reality or fact? Indeed, the eternal world plan is precisely as it absolutely has to be in order to be one-hundred-per-cent in the living being's favour. And this being so, it constitutes one-hundred-per-cent "love".
