1405. Materialistically minded science has thus no other answer to the riddle of life than that the entire appearance of the living being is merely a collection of matter or substances that are combined in precisely such a way that their combined reactions must of necessity be what we call "life" and the combination of matter mentioned must be what we call a "living being". According to this analysis the "living being" is thus merely a specific "combination of matter", but since this combination is determined in advance, before there could be any question of there being any "life" or "living being", who then could bring about this combination? Who could make the substances group themselves into this or that quantity and connect themselves with one another precisely according to the "recipe" that determines that they can become a "living being"? Indeed, if no "life" exists and thereby no consciousness, no will and no thought, and as a consequence of this no plan can exist either, the appearance or emergence of a "living being" can thus be but the result of "chance".
