1412. Indeed, are not the physical organisms of the living beings mainly a manifestation of water? And is it not the cycle of precisely this "water" that determines that the beings must "be born again of water" and "of the spirit" in order to enter the "kingdom of heaven"? But if water, which in itself is merely a collective mass of matter, constitutes such an ocean of changing scenery in the great cycle and can never perish, neither in muddy puddles nor in clouds, and if all the other substances in existence are likewise eternally changing scenery in the same cycle and are thereby imperishable, how much more then must not the "divine something", which in itself is in no way subject to this cycle, be eternal? Is it conceivable that this "something", which is of course the originator of the cycle and is therefore "that which is alive" in the living beings, could perish in a sewer when not even the dead things can perish in that way, but immediately rise up and move towards purity, towards the sky and the clouds so as to glow on the mountains, refreshing life or in some other way providing the brilliant colours of the great space? Is it conceivable that this enormous scenery, these enormous perspectives shown by the cycle of water, are merely for the water's own sake? Would it not be more in keeping with the truth to suppose that they occur only by the "spirit" connecting itself with the "water" or matter, thereby revealing itself as a "living being" or an "image of God"? Is it not easy to see here why the individual or the being time and time again must "be born again of water and the spirit"? Does the living being not take part in the journey downwards into the sewer, downwards into the filth and dirt, downwards into darkness, ignorance and depression, just as well as it takes part in the journey of the "water" or matter upwards towards purity, intellectuality, joy in living or love, in order thereby to sparkle on the heights? Is it not precisely this that the many steps of the "ladder of evolution" show? Is it not precisely this that is the divine will behind and the purpose of the spiral cycle?
