1443. And in accordance with the above the eternal life of the living being takes the form of an alternating manifestation as a "living" being and a "dead" being. And in existence or the spiral cycle there are therefore two great spheres or zones, namely one in which the being experiences itself as a "living being" or as identical with its "eternal existence", and another in which the being experiences itself as a "dead being", which means, as identical with "matter" or the "created". Thus the spiral cycle or the structure of eternal life comprises a "zone of life" and a "zone of death". From Livets Bog we are already familiar with this "zone of life" and "zone of death", zones that respectively constitute "light" and "darkness", and "good" and "evil". Both of these zones extend all the way round the spiral cycle. There is therefore not one single point or area in this cycle where they do not both exist. If this were not the case, if there were an area in the cycle or a period of time in the inner life of the living being where they did not both exist in its being, this life would have to be completely devoid of contrast, which in turn means, completely devoid of the faculty to manifest. Such a living being could neither experience nor manifest itself, because this process is based exclusively on the principle of contrast. Every experience or sensation is merely an experience and creation of contrasts. Where there are no contrasts, no experience or creation is possible. An eternal stagnation would dominate the situation. And such a situation could be nothing other than an eternal "absolute" "death". The entire spiral cycle, which is the true structure of "eternal life", is indeed at one and the same time a "zone of life" and a "zone of death", but the "zone of death" is not an "absolute" "death".
