Livets Bog, vol. 4
The terrestrial human being's present dark state has the sole task of creating a longing for "lasting peace"
1450. In our research into eternal life we have now come so far that we can see that it manifests itself in the form of two great contrasts, namely "light" and "darkness", which here means, the "kingdom of life" where the living being is "one with the Father" and recognises its immortality and identity with eternity, and the "kingdom of death" or zone of the "killing principle" in which the being has lost its cosmic consciousness, does not recognise its immortality or identity with eternity and denies God, just as it believes that the living being constitutes "matter" and therefore treats its neighbour as dead substance. It is this cosmic, dead existence that culminates in the form of war, murder and mutilation and to a predominant extent constitutes the terrestrial human being's zone of existence today. This darkness, this total cosmic ignorance or unconsciousness is therefore also the only thing that is absolutely concrete for the ordinary terrestrial human being. But this form of existence has the sole task of giving rise to an inevitable desire or wish in the being to leave this darkness or dead world for a mental zone where the beings are free of all the disharmony and all the infringements of the law and the ensuing pain and suffering that they have endured for many, many terrestrial lives. It is the fulfilment of this wish that is expressed as "lasting peace".
