But the evolution of the sexual drive from being a tiny rivulet to being the mighty river it is at present is also reflected in the beginnings of a tendency to separate intercourse from fertilisation. Thousands, indeed one could say millions of people the world over want sexual intercourse and sexual satisfaction, but they want at all costs to prevent intercourse from having consequences. They definitely do not want to have children. And a whole series of contraceptive methods has gradually been devised. This could not be prevented by the marital injunction of the Law of Moses; "be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the Earth, and subdue it."
