1472. The phenomena of foeticide or abortion have not of course come into existence solely for financial reasons. They are a direct consequence of the steadily progressing sexual evolution or the growing erotic demand and the ensuing marital degeneration caused by the evolution of terrestrial mankind. This demand or desire has, as we have seen, developed to dimensions that certainly cannot be contained within the limits or spheres of marriage. This desire is thus the fundamental driving force in the entire terrestrial human sphere of life. But what then is this desire? Is it something "evil"? From a purely material point of view this desire is the force that sustains all conscious mental life and thereby the creation or manifestation of both "evil" and "good". There is nothing whatsoever in the structure of the living being that is not an effect of sexual desire. The sexual drive lies behind both the beating of the heart and the birth of every living being that enters the physical world from the spiritual world. It lies behind both the enormous inspiration and power of a speaker, just as it lies behind the affectionate, seductive whispering of a lover to his or her beloved. It promotes the exuberant joy in living and amorous songs of birds in spring, just as it lies behind the amorous rapture and wedding nights of terrestrial human beings. It promotes the most terrible murder, the most hideous brutality, torture and mutilation or pure sadism, as well as the radiant, all-embracing devotion of neighbourly love, that is, the joy and delight that lies in emanating light and warmth to those around one. It ultimately causes the individual to love regardless of all outer phenomena, all concepts of beauty, race or position, just as it also limits affection or love so that it is dependent on these concepts of beauty, race, social position, moral concepts or the opinion of the flock. The same drive promotes the individual's passage from the radiant regions of light of the highest spiritual worlds down to the most barren, darkest regions of hatred, sorrow and sufferings chilled by mental coldness. It carries the individual from the very highest knowledge of its identity with the Godhead down to the most complete ignorance and primitiveness, where the being believes itself to be one with matter and substance, and treats itself and its neighbour as mere "temporal things" whose only prospect is annihilation. It deprives the individual of its "cosmic consciousness" and makes the eternal being synonymous with "death", just as it carries the individual out of the cold, dark sphere of "death", elevating it to the very highest pinnacles of intellectuality or cosmically conscious mental life beyond all clouds as the eternal light of the universe and the cities of suns, as one with the eternal Father. The sexual desire and its satisfaction is the very highest form of hunger and satiation, and is thereby the alpha and omega of all existence, of "good" and of "evil". It constitutes the eternally blazing dynamic force without which no manifestation or creation of any kind, and thereby no revelation and no experience of life would be possible. This hunger and satiation is therefore here in Livets Bog expressed by the term the "highest fire".
