1564. Why have the measures mentioned above arisen? Why can the terrestrial human being not continue using the killing principle, as it had to and could in its distant past? Why is this killing principle today called "sin" or the "wages of sin", when previously in the history of the human being it was the worship of God, was the heroic life, was the way leading to the favour of the gods of that time and the "kingdom of heaven"? Here one might answer that it is because human beings are cleverer, more experienced and more intelligent. They become increasingly weary of this never-ending life of mental volcanoes and earthquakes, which is in itself the killing principle or the principle of persecuting one's neighbour. And this is absolutely true, but it is not an exhaustive or conclusive answer to the question of transformation. There must be a cause that makes the individual use its intelligence to pick and choose. This cause is the individual's ability to "feel a liking and disliking". If this ability did not lie behind the intelligence, the individual would never have any use for its intelligence. Intelligence is a means or an ability through which the individual is more or less able to free itself from what it "dislikes" and create a connection to the things that it "likes". The ability to "like" and "dislike" is the same as the ability to feel "pleasantness" and "unpleasantness", this ability in turn being the basis of all experience and manifestation. It is the feeling of "pleasure" and "displeasure" that directs the individual's instinct, gravity, intelligence, intuition and memory. This ability is thus the mother faculty of all the other faculties. It is the primordial faculty or the mental instrument panel through which the I directs its entire experience of life.
