Livets Bog, vol. 4
Real sexuality or the "highest fire", and with this the perfect life, is just as hidden in the sexuality of male beings and female beings as true life is hidden in a tree during its leafless winter period
1567. This difference in degree is no different to the difference there is in degree between the trunk of a tree and its branches. All the living being's pleasures and its ability to feel a liking and disliking constitute merely a principle, a collected or assembled structure in the form of the "sexual principle" or the "highest fire". This fire or principle can be compared to a big tree. The animals' drive to mate and marry is the trunk of this tree, while all their other pleasurable feelings are its branches. But as far as the animal kingdom is concerned, this tree is subject to the principle of death or winter in the spiral cycle. It is therefore stripped of its leaves. The animal beings are leafless trees in the great winter zone of the cycle. The individuals of the animal kingdom in the form of the "male sex" and the "female sex" constitute a forest of leafless trees. True or real life, the "highest fire" or true sexuality, is just as hidden in the organism and appearance of these beings as the true life in a tree is hidden during its leafless winter period. The "highest fire", the true culmination of the sexual principle, is, however, to be compared to the leafy, flowering or fruit-bearing tree. Just as a tree in the summer, with its crown of leaves, flowers, fruits, colours and scents, teems with a revelation of visible life, so too will the living being appear with a crown of leaves of burgeoning life in which its flowers, fruits, colours and scents in the form of the highest intellectuality or "cosmic consciousness" and its knowledge and ability in the form of "neighbourly love" will make it a dweller in the spiral cycle's summer zone or "kingdom of heaven", will make it a tree in a luxuriant leafy forest of beings in "God's image".
