Unlike physical birth, this "mental birth" is not a kind of sudden process that normally lasts only a few moments."Mental birth" is a process that begins at the same time as physical birth and continues until the being has come of age, that is to say has reached "maturity".The embryo of lower species of animals can survive on its own immediately after physical birth.Here their "mental embryonic state" so to speak ceases at the same time as their physical birth.It can cease so abruptly and quickly among these beings because their mentality is still very limited or elementary in the present spiral cycle, and also because their outer physical vital functions are so simple or straightforward that they evolved to become completely independent, automatic functions that can come into action immediately after physical birth.Here the physical vital functions are thus of a more independent subconscious nature than they are among beings that have advanced further in evolution.The more evolved the beings become on the physical plane, the more do their physical vital functions become wakingly day-consciousness functions, and return once again to being subconscious functions after the being in the process of evolution has passed the culmination of its physical existence.This transfer of the functions from the day-consciousness to the subconsciousness spiritualises the being or the human being, while the opposite is thus the case when the physical vital functions transfer from the subconsciousness to the day-consciousness.During this latter transfer the living being becomes physical, becomes "involved" in matter, becomes one with matter, while during the former transition the being "evolves" and becomes one with the spirit.
