1613. In spite of everything, it could not possibly be obliterated from the beings' consciousness. This higher form of life experience has left a small, indestructible shoot or rather a tiny seed so deep within the innermost self of the terrestrial human being that it could not possibly be destroyed, even though the outer transformations of the poles have created huge mental storms, sorrows and sufferings, and cast an outer, superficial dark veil of oblivion over its memories of the superterrestrial or heavenly world it has left behind in the past. This is evident through the fact that throughout the dark stages we see a tendency in the being to seek an unknown superior force when its life is in danger. Animals that are so advanced in evolution that they can produce sounds voice this petition in the form of a cry of terror. These beings have of course no waking, day-conscious, detailed perception of this utterance. It occurs, so to speak, one hundred per cent automatically on every occasion when the life of its source is in danger. In the human being who is further advanced in evolution this tendency in the being has become a wakingly day-conscious phenomenon. It lies at the root of its religious belief. Through it, the being feels a guiding providence to which it turns in situations in which all other paths are closed or impassable. When the being is let down by friends, is persecuted and tyrannised by enemies, is injured or has an accident, becomes ill and suffers and in all these situations feels helpless, its mental attitude will be guided organically towards the thought of help from this Providence. The actual tendency to seek Providence is thus not something that has been invented by human beings. The tendency mentioned is an organic function showing a fundamental link in the structure of the world between the living being and Nature surrounding it.
