1615. The tendency inherited from the animals to direct one's consciousness towards Providence when one's life is in danger had thus here in the human being become a living, day-conscious, detailed idea, which in turn became the foundation of religious worship. Gradually, as human beings evolved, this worship also evolved and was transformed and adapted to the imaginative scope of the new step in evolution. The concept of Providence or the Godhead thereby came to change form. It became, as it were, clearer and clearer. With evolution, a more profound insight emerged. The many "gods" became one "god", and the many "devils" became one "devil". And the foundation for religious worship became the world picture with its view of "God" and "Satan", which is to say, among other things, the ecclesiastical "Christian" world picture.
